Dr. Olenick currently serves as Professor of 物理 和 a teacher of popular courses 在物理学和天文学中.  He has supervised over fifty undergraduate theses.  He also served as the Associate Project Director of the PBS television series, 机械宇宙 和 超越机械宇宙.  He was also principal author of accompanying textbooks published by Cambridge University 新闻.   He also received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation 和 美国.S. My re搜索, which was initially funded by the Nancy Cain 马库斯 和 Jeffrey A. 马库斯 Chair in Science, involves photometric studies, data analysis, 和 modeling of cataclysmic 变星(cv).   Since then we have discovered  和 classified a new dwarf nova, observed exoplanetary 凌日, 和 discovered new binaries.
 

Cataclysmic variables are binary systems in which a white orbits with a normal star.  The orbital periods of CVs typically range from approximately 0.5日至0日.6天. These binaries are quite small by astronomical sizes.  这些双星的演化 occurs through mass transfer from the secondary to 白矮星. 的光度 of CVs is dominated by the accretion disk.  Strong tidal forces from 白矮星 pull hydrogen gas from the surrounding Roche lobe of the secondary 和 larger star 通过L1拉格朗日点.  The gas spirals down around 白矮星 和 usually 形成一个吸积盘.  If 白矮星 has a large magnetic field, the materials may be directed right onto the surface of the star. 当气体积聚时,形成 shell around 白矮星, thermonuclear fusion reactions can be re-ignited on 白矮星. 

My current re搜索 into CVs focuses on improved ways of determining the mass ratio through observations 和 accretion disk modeling 和 is carried out with collaborators Dr. Michele Montgomery at 美国niversity of Central Florida 和 Dr. Irina Voloshina at the Sternberg Institute of Moscow State University.  他的研究学生 accompanied him to Moscow 和 to Crimea for observations with Dr. 新沃洛希娜 cataclysmic variable stars as well as to Colorado to gather data to 搜索 for exoplanet 凌日.

I also 搜索 for exoplanets with students 和 my colleague, 阿瑟·斯威尼 in our STExTS project--Small Telescope Extrasolar Transit 搜索.  从2011年开始 up telescopes during the summers in Pitkin, Colorado (elevation 9210 ft) 和 later 在上半岛.  For the past two years we have used our telescopes at the Monroe Robotic Observatory of 美国niversity of North Texas to gather data.  每一个 summer we gather data on approximately 3500 - 5000 stars for 30 - 38 nights 和 then sift through the light curves looking for 凌日.  我们目前有7名候选人 寻找新的系外行星凌日.
